Tivoli Theatre, Grimsby; William Hepworth, Stage Manager c1908.
An original, unposted postcard. The producer is not given or is not visible.
The Tivoli Theatre opened in December 1905 in Duncombe Street, Grimsby (which is off Freeman Street). This early, printed postcard shows a portrait of the stage manager, William Hepworth and is signed “Faithfully Yours, Wm. Hepworth”. At the bottom of the card is “With Compliments”. It’s likely that the card dates to sometime around the opening of the theatre. A rare piece of theatre memorabilia.
The Tivoli Theatre was badly damaged by German bombs on 12th July 1943 and never re-opened. The remains of the building were completely demolished in 1955 and the location is now the site of the auction house for Jackson, Green & Preston.
Note: A William Hepworth, stage manager, born 26th March 1880 and single was living in Rochdale in 1939.
