Robert (Bob) Allington was born in Grimsby in 1849. He was the second son of James and Elizabeth Allington of King Edward Street South. Robert was a dock labourer by the age of 11. He married Hannah Maria Wilkinson on 13th April 1870. Hannah was a farmer’s daughter. The Wilkinsons also lived in King Edward Street. At the time of his marriage, Robert was an oil cake maker.
A year later, Robert’s wife’s name is given as Elizabeth on the 1871 Census. The couple lived in Havelock Street. Robert was still an oil cake maker. In 1881, Robert was back living with his parents. He was a flour miller.
In 1891, Robert Allington was living at 19 Rendel Street on West Marsh with, Hannah Brown, a widow, and a 9 year old relation called Hetty Burkinshaw. Robert was now a labourer on a coal drop.
In 1901, Robert, at the age of 50, was still a labourer on a coal drop. He was still living at 19 Rendel Street with Hannah Brown, widow, and adopted daughters Hetty Burkinshaw (net braider), aged 19, and Elsie Wilkinson, aged 9.
In 1907, Robert married Hannah Brown. His second wife called Hannah.
By 1911, Bob and Hannah were living at 25 Rendel Street. He was a coal tipper.
Robert Allington died on 18th June 1924. Hannah died on 25th November 1940. The couple are buried in Scartho Road Cemetery.
Note: Hannah Maria Allington died on 7th January 1907. (Her address was given as 72 Watkin Street.) Robert married Hannah Brown later that year.
