Grimsby

An original handbill (flyer) dated 1893. The handbill was printed by Grimsby News Co., Ltd., Printers, 85, Victoria Street, Great Grimsby.

Arthur Charles Pailthorp was born in Louth, Lincolnshire in 1862. He was the son of Charles Pailthorp, watchmaker then jeweller, and Harriet. Arthur Charles Pailthorp married Evelyn Alice Withers in Grimsby on 19th April 1892. They were both living in Victoria Street, Grimsby at the time of their marriage (No. 68 and No. 30). Evelyn was the daughter of Septimus Withers, florist and fruiterer (West End Fruit Store). He later became a café proprietor (West End Café & Restaurant, 30 Victoria Street).

In 1901 Arthur Charles Pailthorp and Evelyn Alice Pailthorp were living at 4 Grosvenor Crescent (Deansgate), Grimsby. They had 4 children. In 1911, the family were living at 68 Kingsway, Cleethorpes. Their shop was at 68 Victoria Street, Grimsby. By then, they had 8 children; Isobel, Dan, Charles, Joan, Marjorie, Molly, Evelyn and Jack. Arthur Charles Pailthorp was a silversmith in 1901 and a jeweller and silversmith in 1911.

Arthur Charles Pailthorp died on 29th October 1916, aged 54. Probate was granted to Evelina Alice Pailthorp, widow, in 1918. Evelina Alice Pailthorp died on 3rd August 1934, aged 65. (Probate was granted to Dan Pailthorp, silversmith.) The couple are buried in Cleethorpes Cemetery.

Note: Jack Pailthorp died in 1917, aged 7. Note: Dan Pailthorp, jeweller and shopkeeper, lived at ‘Pepperdale House’, Howsham, Cadney, Near Brigg in 1939. His wife, Violet, was a Radio shopkeeper. He died in 1955, aged 59. (Was he injured in WW1?) Note: Charles Pailthorp, jeweller, lived at ‘White Bungalow’, Grainthorpe in 1939. He died in 1955, aged 59.

Note: A. C. Pailthorpe (Jewellers) Ltd., 68/70 Victoria Street, Grimsby was later owned by the Abrahams family.
