Serious coastal erosion; Sea Bank Road (now Kingsway), Cleethorpes c1903.
A detail from an original, photographic postcard by an unknown photographer/publisher. (The initials J. K. are visible in the photograph.)
This view shows the terrible state Sea Bank Road was in just before the sea defences and promenade were constructed. The magnificent, new promenade known then and now as “Kingsway” was opened by Lady Henderson, on the 12th July, 1906.
The Oyster Bar in the photograph is where, until very recently, Valerie’s Italian was. Ross Castle, the pier and two trams are visible in the picture.
The postcard was posted from Grimsby on 9th October 1906 to F. S. Hollingworth, 307 Cleethorpes Road, Grimsby. No message. This was (Fred) Sidney Hollingworth (1888-1935), son of Maria Hollingworth, tobacconist. Sidney became a commercial traveller (timber) and then went to war. He was born in Grimsby and died in Bridlington, aged 47. In 1939, his widow, Florence Adelaide Hollingworth, was a director of a timber importing office and living at 22 Meadowfield Road, Bridlington. Florence died in 1978 having done very well for herself.
