Tierney’s Cigars vesta case; Grimsby early 1900s.

Grimsby

A match case which neatly opens by pressing above the word ‘SMOKE’. It has a well-used match striker on the left edge. Pat: Appd for Reg No 331425.

John Michael Tierney (1861-1923) established a public company, based in Grimsby, which manufactured cigars and cigarettes (wholesale and retail). He also owned a number of tobacconists. At various times, these “under the green lamp” shops were located at: 110 Cleethorpe Road 42 Cleethorpe Road 56 Cleethorpe Road 19 Old Market Place 20 Old Market Place 22a Freeman Street 58 Freeman Street 259 Freeman Street Cross Street Wharncliffe Road

The first shop was established in 1891. The last shop closed in the 1970s, we believe.

John Michael Tierney was born in Grimsby in 1861. He died in Grimsby on 19th July 1923. His last address was 45 Heneage Road. His wife, Alice, had died on 28th March 1909. John Michael Tierney and Alice Welby married in Yarmouth in 1884. (Alice was born in Limerick, Ireland.) The Tierney children were: Mary Catharine (1885), Minnie (1886), John Patrick (1887), Thomas (1888), Francis Edward (1890) and James (1892).

Note: It appears that Francis Edward Tierney and Frederick William Welby, Alice’s brother born in Limerick Ireland, took over the company after the death of John Michael Tierney.
