The Palace Theatre, Grimsby c1907.
A detail from an original, posted, photographic postcard by Harry Shaw, Grant Thorold Studio, 54 Durban Road, Grimsby.
The Palace Theatre, on Victoria Street, opened in 1904. In 1931, The Palace became a cinema. In 1943, the cinema closed and The Palace reopened as a variety theatre after the town’s Tivoli Theatre was bombed. The Palace was demolished in 1979. The Palace Buffet on the corner has survived.
Note: The wife of Harry Shaw, Florence Maud Shaw of 13 Wentworth Road Grimsby, died in 1951. To date, we have not been able to trace Harry after 1911. Did he die in WW1? Their daughter, Phyllis Shaw who died in 1976, is buried with her mother in Scartho Road Cemetery. Florence and Phyllis were living with Phyllis’ sister, Myra Woods, and husband in Grimsby in 1939.
The postcard was posted in Grimsby on 20th July 1907. (Sender’s name illegible. N.?). The recipient was Mr F. Dietry, Mess. 3. St., H.M.S. ‘Tyne’, Chatham, Kent. The message reads, “Dear F., Just a line to let you know that I received your P. Card, and was very pleased to hear from you again, and to know that you was alright. Do you know the theatre again? I am going over to Hull tomorrow, Saturday, for a week. Mother and all at home wish to be remembered to you, and hope you don’t quite forget “Grimsby”. Be sure to write again and let us know how you are going on. Kind regard. Sincere Friend”.
