‘Ghost’ outlines of a WW2 Italian POW camp at Weelsby Woods revealed by drought.
The outlines of buildings were revealed during the drought of 2018. The drought of 2022 has again revealed the exact positions of the same buildings. Some of the markings in the parched grass are remarkably clear!
German POWs, as well as Italian POWs, were probably held at the camp. After the war, Weelsby Woods Camp became a temporary home for Polish Carpathian Lancers who fought on behalf of Britain. Many then chose to settle in the Grimsby/Cleethorpes area, or elsewhere, rather than to return to a Poland firmly under Communist control.
