SS ‘Accrington’ at Grimsby c1920s/1930s.
From a negative. The photo was taken at Grimsby, possibly Alexandra Dock. The photographer was most probably J. S. Bullen.
SS ‘Accrington’ was a passenger and cargo vessel built for the Great Central Railway by Earle’s Shipbuilding, Hull. She was launched on 7th June 1910. A “new, saloon steamer”. She was one of an order for four ships, the others being ‘Dewsbury’, ‘Blackburn’ and ‘Bury’. This was at a time when Grimsby was the gateway to the continent with services to Antwerp, Rotterdam, Hamburg and Esbjerg.
After being requisitioned during WW2, she returned to LNER for service as a ferry and passed to British Railways in 1948. Scrapped in 1951.
