Wellow Brewery, Grimsby beer bottle with flip-top stopper c1910.
A beer bottle with a flip-top or swing-top or lightning toggle or Quillfeldt stopper. The bottle is heavily embossed with “THIS BOTTLE IS THE PROPERTY OF THE WELLOW BREWERY CO. GRIMSBY”. On the base of the bottle is the “N & Co. Ltd.” (Nuttall & Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancs.) makers name with a ‘keyhole’ or ‘tear drop’ makers mark. This dates the bottle to between 1900 and 1913.
The stopper says “3 Jotas” on it. What does this mean? Three Jacks? A number of foreign bars are named “Tres Jotas”.
The Wellow Brewery (c1899-c1986) in Wellowgate was brewing beer for almost all of the first half on the twentieth century.
