Grimsby Commercial Docks

From a negative. SSBury’ is dry-docked by the Royal Dock, near the Dock Tower, nose in first.

SSBury’ was a passenger and cargo vessel built for the Great Central Railway by Earle’s Shipbuilding, Hull. She was launched in 1910 and completed in 1911. Anew, saloon steamer”. She was one of an order for four ships, the others beingDewsbury’, ‘Blackburn’ andAccrington’. This was at a time when Grimsby was the gateway to the continent with services to Antwerp, Rotterdam, Hamburg and Esbjerg.

SSBury’ was in Hamburg at the outbreak of WW1 and the crew were taken as prisoners-of-war, apart from the stewardesses. She was returned by the Germans in 1919. During WW2, SSBury’ served as a convoy rescue ship and collected survivors from various ships.

Scrapped in 1958.

Note: Are those cannon shot holes near the waterline? SSBury’ was damaged in a collision in the River Elbe in 1936. Are these holes the result of that collision?

Note: Members of the Hitler Youth on a tour of the UK, boarded the SSBury’ in Grimsby for their journey back to Germany. They had arrived at Grimsby on the SSStockport’ in July 1938.
