Buzzard at Beechfield Zoo, Grimsby 1930s.

Grimsby

An original photo by an unknown photographer. From a small collection.

Beechfield Zoo was located on College Street, Grimsby, off Bargate. The Zoo was owned by Albert Sutcliffe and his head keeper was John Haith who later established Haith’s bird seed company. The Zoo opened in 1928 and closed in 1939.

The former home of Albert Sutcliffe, “Beechfield”, in Augusta Street, is still there. Some of the land occupied the zoo remains undeveloped. Part of the zoo’s perimeter wall can still be seen in College Street.

It’s likely that most Beechfield Zoo visitors had never seen such a large bird of prey before.

More photos of the zoo appear on our ‘Grimsby’ page.
