Grimsby Fish Docks

An original, large, Victorian photograph mounted on board. The photographer is unknown. The workers are probably marine engineers.

The name ‘Umguza’ is written in chalk on the propellor. It was common practice to do this to avoid confusion. ‘Umguza’ GY.70 was built in 1896 by Cochrane & Cooper, Beverley for the Grimsby Union Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. She was sold to W. Lautburn of Grimsby in 1908.

In 1909, ‘Umguza’ was sold to a company in Russia and renamed ‘Rabotnik’. In 1917, she was sold to another company in Russia and renamed ‘Vefa’. Later. she operated out of Turkey as a cargo vessel named ‘Stella’ and then ‘Nafia’. In 1936, she was sold to the Turkish Government and, subsequently, to various Turkish companies. Scrapped c1961.

Note: The windows at the back of the building are typical of those seen on other old Grimsby Docks photos.
