Alderman Jack Sutcliffe’s funeral procession 1913.
An original photographic postcard. The name of the photographer/publisher is unknown. We are grateful to Tracey Townsend of North East Lincolnshire Archives (Lincs Inspire Ltd.) who has identified the location as the junction of Dudley Street and Cartergate. The great and the good from the Grimsby area were present at the funeral.
Jack Sutcliffe was Mayor of Grimsby 1896-1897. He was the eldest son of John Sutcliffe who established John Sutcliffe & Sons (Shipping Agents) in 1851. Jack Sutcliffe headed the family business after the death of his father until his own death in 1913.
Jack Sutcliffe was born in Liverpool, Lancashire on 17th January 1846. He was the son of John Sutcliffe (1812-1877), ship broker/gentleman/merchant, and Isabella Sutcliffe (1825-1891) of Stallingborough House, Stallingborough. John married Isabella Cordingley in Bradford in 1840. The family moved to Lincolnshire in about 1863 when their eight children were baptised at Stallingborough. John Sutcliffe died in Stallingborough, Lincolnshire in 27th December 1877, aged 65. Isabella Sutcliffe of the Manor House, Stallingborough died in Stallingborough on 22nd November 1891. (Probate was granted to Tom Sutcliffe, general commission shipping and forwarding agent.)
By 1881, Jack Sutcliffe, shipping agent/commission agent, was living at “Field House”, Grimsby with three servants. Jack married Harriet Sophia Garvey (1852-1920) at Ashby cum Fenby on 28th August 1873. She was the daughter of James Garvey, rector of Ashby cum Fenby. The couple had a son, Ernest Sutcliffe (1875-1951), a daughter, Ethel Sutcliffe (1877-1961), a son, John Garvey Sutcliffe (1878-1945) and another son Albert Sutcliffe (1883-1958). Jack Sutcliffe died in Grimsby in 1913. Harriet died in Christchurch, Hampshire in 1920. They are both buried at Stallingborough.
Ernest Sutcliffe was born on 17th August 1875. He married Mary ? (1891-1962) They lived at Stewton House, Stewton Lane, Louth. Ernest Sutcliffe died on 13th June 1951. He is buried at Ashby-cum-Fenby. Mary Sutcliffe died in Lincoln in 1962. Tom Sutcliffe (son of John Sutcliffe) and Ernest Sutcliffe (grandson of John Sutcliffe) were the principals of J. Sutcliffe & Sons in 1914.
Ethel Sutcliffe married Bruce Lloyd-Owen (1881-1916), Captain of a first-class torpedo boat H.M. T.B. 8 (formerly H.M.S. ‘Gnat’), in Grimsby in 1908. He later captained H.M.S. ‘Foyle’, H.M.S. ‘Mohawk’, H.M.S. ‘Landrail’. Lieutenant-Commander Bruce Lloyd-Owen became ill and died on 16th May 1916. Ethel Lloyd-Owen of Crossways, Parkestone Avenue, Southsea travelled to Tangier in 1939. She died in Amersham, Buckinghamshire in 1961.
John Garvey Sutcliffe, a clerk at a timber importer’s office, continued to live at “Field House”, Grimsby until 1921. He then moved to “Fairholme”, 9 Welholme Road, Grimsby where he was still living when he died on 1st April 1945. He is buried in Scartho Road Cemetery.
Albert Sutcliffe was born on 11th March 1883. Albert married Dorothy Mary Elizabeth Gilmore (1890-1935) in Brigg in 1913. Albert was a Lieutenant in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, France & Flanders, 1916-1918. By 1921, the couple were living at “Beechfield”, 8 Augusta Street, Grimsby. Dorothy Mary Elizabeth Sutcliffe of “Beechfield”, Augusta Street, Grimsby died on 22nd July 1935. She is buried at Brigg. Albert was a widower and coal merchant in 1939, living at 16 Abbey Road. He married Constance Lottie Chase, a smoke room waitress at the Railway Hotel, in Cleethorpes in 1940. Albert Sutcliffe of 16 Abbey Road died on 10th January 1958. Constance Lottie Sutcliffe of 87 Cromwell Road died on 14th February 1962. Albert and Constance are buried at Stallingborough.
Albert Sutcliffe established Grimsby’s Beechfield Zoo behind his house, with the entrance in College Street. The zoo was very popular in the 1920s/1930s but closed before WW2. ———————–

Note: Harry Sutcliffe (1849-1884), brother of Jack, was born in Brighouse, Yorkshire. In 1881, he was a shipping agent living at The Manor House, Stallingborough. Harry died at Southsea, aged 35. He is buried at Stallingborough.
Note: Elizabeth Sutcliffe (1851-1929), sister of Jack, was born in Bradford. She married Edward Jackson Lowe, vicar of Stallingborough, in Stallingborough in 1881. (Edward Jackson Lowe M.A. (1825-1893) was born in Gloucester and was a widower at the time of his marriage to Elizabeth. Elizabeth was mother to three children and two stepchildren.) Elizabeth and Edward are buried at Stallingborough. After the death of Edward, Elizabeth moved with her two children to Cheltenham. (Elizabeth’s stepson, Willoughby Prescott Lowe, was a significant ornithologist and naturalist who travelled the world. See Wikipedia.)
Note: Mary Annie Sutcliffe (1853-1936), sister of Jack, was born in Bradford. She married Charles Daley (1827-1914) in 1874. The couple lived in Wynstay House, Cheltenham with their children (born in Hertford) and mother-in-law, Isabella Sutcliffe. Mary Annie and Charles are buried at Cheltenham.
Note: Emily/Emma Sutcliffe (1857/1859 -1890), sister of Jack, was born in York. She married James Pyman (1850-1887), ship broker, in the Caistor area in 1876. James died in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1887, aged 37. Emily, of Kelso House, Newcastle upon Tyne (Jesmond) died on 10th December 1890. Their son, John Sutcliffe Pyman of Sutton Surrey, married Margit Maud Haagensen of Spring Villa, Bargate, Grimsby in Grimsby in 1902.
Note: Alice Maud Sutcliffe (1861-1944), sister of Jack, was born in West Hartlepool. She married Jacob Kelk Marshall (1859-1936) of the local family of corn millers. They died in Kent. They were the parents of Brigadier (Temporary) Charles Frederick Kelk MARSHALL, D.S.O.*, M.C.
Note: Kate Sutcliffe (1863-1942), sister of Jack, was born in Stallingborough, Lincolnshire on 12th March 1863. She married Ernest William Robert Farebrother F.R.I.B.A. (1853-1891), architect, in the Caistor area in 1885. Kate Farebrother, widow, married John Brooks Wood (1869-1901), farmer at Habrough, on 17th July 1894. The couple appear to have lived at Winchester. Kate Brooks-Wood died in Bury St Edmunds in 1942.
Note: Tom Sutcliffe (1865-1931), brother and youngest sibling of Jack, was born in Stallingborough on 2nd July 1865. Tom, steamship/shipping agent, was the only members of the family still living at The Manor House, Stallingborough from 1901 to 1931. Tom Sutcliffe died at Duchy House (a nursing home), Harrogate on 8th January 1931. Tom Sutcliffe was educated at Haileybury and Oxford. He became the head of the family company, J. Sutcliffe & Sons. In 1922, he was elected MP for Great Grimsby. He was re-elected in 1923. He was High Sheriff of Lincolnshire 1929-30.
