Grimsby

A photo taken in September 2022.

Albert Gait (1834-1907) was born in Shepton Mallet in Somerset. He was a printer, bookseller at stationer at 13 Market Place, Grimsby by 1861. He built up a very well-known business. The book/stationery shop was at 13 Old Market Place for over 110 years. He founded the large printing works on Victoria Street. The association of the name Gait and printing disappeared from Grimsby following the closing of Wyndeham Gait, printers, in 2015.

Albert Gait married Kate Judith Lemon, of Brentwood, Essex, in Islington, London in 1868. The couple had four sons, all born in Grimsby; Albert Ernest (1869-1945), Harry Joslin (1872-1949 in Canada), Frank Lemon (1874-1934) and John Sidney (1876-1916). Kate Judith Gait, of 6 Grosvenor Crescent, Grimsby, died in 1927, aged 90. Albert Ernest Gait, and other family members carried on the business through the decades.

John Sidney Gait of 6 Grosvenor Crescent, Great Grimsby, lance corporal of 16th battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps, was killed in action in France in 1916. He is commemorated at Thiepval Memorial, France.

Albert, Kate Judith, John Sidney and Frank Lemon are named on the memorial in the photo.
