A copy of the thirteenth century seal of Grimsby Corporation.
Obtained from the Turntable Gallery, 8 Victoria Street Grimsby. The gallery is Grimsby’s newest contemporary art space.
The seal is one of the finest medieval seals in the country. The design symbolises the legend of the founding of Grimsby. Grim, Havelok’s foster-father, is in the centre of the seal. Havelok is on the left and Princess Goldeburgh (Goldeboru) is on the right. “Sigillum comunitatis Grimebye” translates to “Seal of the Corporation of Grimsby”.
A number of interpretations of the legend of Grim and Havelok can easily be found online as well as the poem ‘Havelok’, which is 3,000 lines long.
