Poster advertising an evening of variety acts at the Empire Theatre, Cleethorpes; Jackie Dennis, Larry Grayson etc. 1959.

An original Empire Theatre poster dated 27th July 1959. The poster was sent to Ken “Mr Entertainment” Turner of Horncastle.

The acts were: Jackie Dennis – Leith-born performer Jackie Dennis (1942-2020), widely credited as Scotland’s first pop star. Larry Grayson – born William Sulley White (1923-1995), he is best remembered for hosting the BBC’s popular series ‘The Generation Game’ from 1978-1982. Joan Hinde – glamorous lady trumpeter – a radio, theatre and cabaret artiste (born 1933, died 2015). Often performed with Ken Dodd, but not on TV. El Granadas – the gaucho & his senorita – a well-known variety act. Miss Lila – and her doggies in the window McAndrews and Mills – artistry in rhythm – a well-known variety act. Plus Sonny Jenks’ ‘Take a Chance’ quiz – dressed as dames. Was popular in pantomimes.

Doug Perritt (1919-1992) was the manager of the theatre at the time. His father, Frank (1895-1975), and his uncle, Charles (1905-1986), ran the theatre as Perritt Bros. after the second world war.

Note: Charles Perritt Ltd. had a music shop at 242 Freeman Street, Grimsby.
