An original, posted, real photographic postcard. The photographer’s ink stamp on the reverse says “Bullen, Grimsby”. The Red Lion Hotel on the corner of Freeman Street and Nelson Street is in the background. St. Andrew’s church is in the distance.

This postcard was sent by “Mother” from Grimsby on 22nd March 1906. The recipient was Mr G. H. Smaller, c/o Mrs Ault, Manchester Row, High Green, Nr. Sheffield. This will have been George Henry Smaller (1882-1972), cycle maker, son of Richard Smaller, blacksmith, and Emma Smaller. The family home was at 56 Hare Street, Grimsby. In 1939, the family were living at 82 Granville Street, Grimsby. George was still living with his parents.

The photographer, Joseph Samuel Bullen, was an Irishman. He worked in Grimsby and Louth from c1905 until c1937. His studios were in Freeman Street and later in Welholme Road.
