Edward John Bannister (1821-1916) established a large coal exporting company in Grimsby. He was also a local coal and salt merchant and dealer. He was a ship owner too. Edward John Bannister was appointed mayor of Grimsby in 1868 and 1869, serving two concurrent terms.

Edward Bannister lived at Springfield on Bargate. His fuel supply and coal exporting companies were still operating into the 1970s, decades after his death in 1916, aged 94.

Note: Edward Bannister was also an artist and local philanthropist, one of the characters who made Great Grimsby great.
