The Pier, Cleethorpes c1903 (before the fire).

Cleethorpes

A printed postcard by an unknown publisher. Posted.

On 29th June 1903, a fire completely wrecked the far end of the pier and removed all traces of the concert hall and refreshment bar. The timbers were charred and the girders were twisted. The replacement building at the end of the pier and the current pavilion, halfway along the pier, were built in 1905.

A section was cut out of the pier during WW2 to impede its use in any German invasion attempt. All traces of the pier behind the current pavilion were removed after the end of the war.

This postcard was posted in Cleethorpes in September 1904. The recipient was Miss Babington, Sacombe Park, Ware, Herts. The message reads, “You will not get your usual on Tuesday as we go to Sheffield on Monday”. Signature illegible.
