Rimac, near Saltfleetby c1920s-1930s.

Northern Lincolnshire

An original, hand-coloured, real photographic postcard. Unposted.

Rimac is located on a sharp bend in the A1031, halfway between Saltfleet and Theddlethorpe. The Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve is reached by means of the track at Rimac which leads to the bridge over the Great Eau. The car park is on the far side.

A military camp was established at Rimac during WW1 to train soldiers in preparation for fighting in France. After WW1, the site was used as a holiday camp and many wooden huts and caravans were located here. In the build up to WW2 in c1935/36, the Air Ministry bought all of the privately owned land and cleared the site in preparation for military purposes, once again. Signs of military use are still visible at Rimac. Now it’s a peaceful haven and of huge importance as a nature reserve.

The postcard shows a camp shop in the interwar years. One sign reads, ‘Lyons Tea’ and another ‘We have for sale camp bedsteads and chairs etc.’. In the background, the sign says ‘Bellamy’s Gold Medal Table Waters’. Bellamy’s factory was in Grimsby.
