The former railway station Refreshment Rooms, the Mermaid Restaurant, and the station Clocktower were built in 1883/1884 by Lockerbie and Wilkinson of Birmingham. They are Grade II Listed Buildings.

In the background is the Excel Bowling Centre in Grant Street. It opened in Grant Street in 1964 on the site of the old Theatre Royal and closed in 1970.
