An excellent, original studio portrait by George Henry Greenwood. Greenwood was one of Grimsby’s finest photographers. He had a studio from before 1909 and until at least 1940. His work covers both WW1 and WW2.

George Henry Greenwood’s earlier studio address was 36 Hainton Avenue and later he moved to 30 Hainton Avenue (now GSB Print & Design).

George Henry Greenwood was born in Grimsby in 1886. He was the son of George Greenwood, tailor’s cutter, born Leeds, and Mary Ann Greenwood, née Coggon, born Sheffield. George and Mary Ann married in Grimsby.

George Henry Greenwood was baptised, as an adult, on 11th February 1908. He married Mary Hannaford Blackmore of 105 Hainton Avenue on 21st February 1909. He later married Florence Webster in 1927 after Mary Hannaford Greenwood died on 5th June 1926, aged 36.

George Henry Greenwood of 24 Roundway, Grimsby died on 25th December 1958. Florence died on 14th April 1985.

Note: The name ‘Hainton Street’ changed to ‘Hainton Avenue’ sometime between 1906 and 1908. Did Henry keep using his photo embosser after the change? Note: ‘18512’ is written on the reverse of the photo. Is this a date code?
