Planting Kingsway Gardens c1905.
An original posted, photographic postcard. No publisher named.
The magnificent ‘Kingsway’ was opened on 12th July 1906 by Lady Henderson. Lady Henderson was the wife of Sir Alexander Henderson, Chairman of the Great Central Railway (GCR) from 1899 until 1922. Here the Kingsway gardens are being created, presumably before the Official Opening, by William Barron & Son, nurserymen and landscape gardeners of Elvastin Nurseries, Borrowash, Derby.
William Barron (1805-1891) established a firm, William Barron & Son, which gained a reputation for plant sales, landscape gardening and the transplantation of large trees and was a leading provider of public park designs.
The postcard was posted in Cleethorpes but the year is unreadable. The message is in pencil, now too faded to read. It was sent by Annie to Arthur Richmond, 46 Park Road, Lenton, Nottingham. (This property still exists.)
