Memorial to Sir Alec Black, 1st Bt (1872-1942).
Sir Alec Black, 1st Bt was born in Grimsby on 23rd December 1872. He was one of the most famous steam trawler owners and a significant character in the history of Grimsby.
Alick (Alec) Black was the son of William Black (d. 1875), marine engineer, and Charlotte Black (née Fox). He married Florence Mary Smith (1871-1940) in Grimsby in 1902. He was living at The Lodge, Bargate in 1921 and moved to Field House, Pelham Road in c1924 after it was sold by John Garvey Sutcliffe.
Sir Alec Black died on 28th June 1942, aged 69, and is buried in Scartho Road Cemetery.
Sir Alec Black’s wife, Lady Florence, divorced him in 1926 on the ground of his adultery. She died in 1940, aged 69, and was buried at Great Grimsby Old Cemetery in Ainslie Street. She was living at Little Horne (Littleholme?), The Park, Sutton-on-Sea.
