‘Cleethorpes Advancement Association’ enamel badge c1930.
An original, enamel, lapel badge by W. Miller of Birmingham. The badge was recently sourced from Prague, Czech Republic. The makers changed their name to H. W. Miller (Harold William Miller) from W. Miller (William Miller) in 1935, so the badge dates to pre-1935.
We are indebted to Dianne Roberts who provided the following information about the ‘Cleethorpes Advancement Association’ taken from the May 8 1930 edition of the Sheffield Daily Telegraph (condensed):
A party of association members arrived in Sheffield in decorated motor vehicles to distribute literature and novelties aimed at promoting Cleethorpes or Sheffield-by-the-Sea, as Cleethorpes was sometimes known. The party included prominent caterers and tradesmen of Cleethorpes led by Councillor G. Wilkie. The route the party took was through Brigg, Lincoln, Newark, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Sutton, Tamworth, Burton-on-Trent, Derby, Sheffield, Stockport, Salford, Warrington, Liverpool, St. Helens, Bolton, Bury, Rochdale, Bradford, Dewsbury, Doncaster, Scunthorpe, Brigg and back to Cleethorpes. Sheffield was Cleethorpes’ best customer and they were trying hard to get new customers.
The ‘Cleethorpes Advancement Association’ were obviously an industrious group and realised the power of advertising. This badge was probably produced for the 1930 advertising tour.
