An original photograph, not a postcard. The people in the photo must be the Fish Dock Master, Arthur Samuel Knox, his wife Alice and his daughter Alice. The property next door belongs to Hobson & Co., auctioneers and fish salesmen.

Arthur Samuel Knox (1857-1933) moved into Fish Dock House, East Pier as fish dock master in 1904.

Arthur Samuel Knox was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk in 1957. In 1884, he was in the Ireland Merchant Navy working as 2nd mate aboard the vessel ‘Moorhen’ registered in Cork. They sailed to Odessa and places around the Mediterranean. In 1886, Arthur passed his Board of Trade Master’s Certificate in Hull. In 1901, he was Master of the screw steamer ‘Warrington’ which sailed between Grimsby and Hamburg. Arthur Samuel Knox moved into Fish Dock House, Grimsby as fish dock master in 1904. By 1921, Arthur was Dock Master at Immingham and lived at 1 Dock Offices, Immingham.

In 1882, Arthur Samuel Knox married Alice West in Grimsby. Alice was the girl next door, but one, in Havelock Street. They had a son, George F. Knox, in Grimsby in 1883, another son, Arthur William Knox, in Grimsby in 1884 and a daughter, Alice Sara Knox, in Grimsby in 1886. Little Arthur died, aged 4, in 1888.

Arthur and Alice lived at 100 Ainslie Street in their later years. Arthur Samuel Knox died in 1933. Alice had already died in 1926. The couple are buried in Scartho Road Cemetery. Alice Sarah Knox, spinster, inherited her parents’ home. She died in 1961 and is buried with her parents. George Knox, died in 1967 and is buried with his parents and sister.
