Victoria Street, Grimsby c1913.

Grimsby

A detail from a real photographic postcard by J.M.J. (Jackson of Grimsby) Series 2.

The properties shown in the picture fit with the 1910 Grimsby Street Directory.

Right to left: 48 Victoria Street – Harold Thompson, hairdresser. 50 Victoria Street – Singer’s Sewing Machine Co., Ltd. 52 Victoria Street – A. Sainsbury, confectioner (sweets). 54 & 56 Victoria Street – William Atkinson & Sons Ltd., complete house furnishers, carpet and rug warehousemen. Tel.: 91. General Post Office.

The word on the shop front canopy reflected in Atkinson’s window is probably “PIANO”. H. C. Rushton, pianoforte and music warehouse is opposite.

The postcard was posted in Boston on 11th October 1913. The sender was WW of 25 Cavendish Street, Grimsby. (This may stand for Walter Whitmore, estate agent, the employer of the resident.). The recipient was Mr R. Nassan, “The Woodlands”, 113 Fletton Avenue, Peterborough. (The address: c/o Barclay’s Bank, Boston has been crossed out.). The message reads, “Why this overwhelming rush of correspondence??”

Note the girl in the tram checking out the shop windows!
