Wallace Burton Smith was born in Leicester on 25th May 1875. In 1881 and 1891, he was living with his grandfather, George Burton, who was a clothier in Louth. His mother, Betsy Smith, was also living at the same address. She was a widow by 1891. Wallace was a printer’s apprentice in 1891.

Wallace Burton Smith married Lucy Hannah Shaw in Louth in 1897. They had a daughter, Gladys Dorothy Smith, in Louth in 1897. In 1901, Wallace and Lucy were living at 54 Pasture Street, as in the photo. Wallace was a print compositor and Lucy was a newsagent and stationer. They had a second child, a son named Sydney Wallace Smith, in Grimsby in 1899. The family were still living at 54 Pasture Street in 1908. By 1910, the family were living at 65 Legsby Avenue and in 1911 Wallace was a machineman in the printing industry. In 1919, the family were living at “Sunnysyde”, Bulwick Avenue, Fairfield, Scartho. In 1921, Wallace, Lucy and Gladys (already widowed) were living at 79 Scartho Road, Grimsby. Wallace was a printer’s machineman working for A, Windle & Co. Ltd, 393 Victoria Street, Grimsby. Gladys was a music teacher.

Wallace Burton Smith, a retired printer aged 64, died on 22nd November 1939. Lucy Hannah Smith died on 27th December 1943. Wallace and Lucy are buried in St Giles’ Cemetery, Scartho. Gladys Dorothy Herrick died on 21st May 1985 and is buried with her parents. (Sydney is not mentioned in the records.)

Note: Gladys Dorothy Smith married Fred Herrick in Scartho in 1918. He was the son of Isaac Henry Herrick, gardener. Fred died on 28th August 1920, aged 24, and is buried in St Giles’ Cemetery, Scartho.

Note: Sydney Wallace Smith was a Dolphin pilot in the RAF in WW1. He married Avis C. Cruise in Grimsby in 1919. They lived at 46 Highgate Cleethorpes. Sydney was an accounts clerk for Hodgson, Harris & Co. of Cleethorpe Road. In 1930, they lived at 42 Beeley Road, Old Clee. The couple parted in 1934. Sydney died in Plymouth, Devon in 1987.
