Cleethorpes

An original, posted, real photographic postcard produced by Woolhouse, Market Street, Cleethorpes.

The photo shows Turner’s “Pier View” boarding house run by Mary Ann Turner. Edith Mary Woolhouse lived at the same address. Edith ran the china and fancy goods shop in this ‘Woolhouse’ photo which she obviously had printed to sell in her newsagent’s shops at 1 Market Street and Humberston Colonnade, Cleethorpes. In c1922, Woolhouse & Turner had a tobacconists and fancy goods shop in Grant Street. In 1926, Mary Ann Turner and Edith Mary Woolhouse lived at “Homestead”, Queen’s Parade, Cleethorpes. They were still tobacconists and newsagents at 2, Grant Street in 1939. In 1958, Mary Ann Turner and Edith Mary Woolhouse lived at “The Cottage”, Cheapside, Waltham (still there).

Edith Mary Woolhouse (1876/1877 Lincoln – 1959) is buried at Waltham. Mary Ann Turner (1879 Grimsby – 1968) is also buried at Waltham.

This postcard was posted in Cleethorpes-Grimsby on 7th July 1914. The recipient was Miss Atkinson of Grainthorpe, Lincolnshire. The message reads, “This is my present abode. Alison.”

Note: Woolhouse & Turner were publishing photos in the 1920s.
