The opening of Corporation Bridge, Alexandra Dock, Grimsby by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales K.G. on 19th July 1928.

A very large, original photo obtained from Glasgow. The photo is incredibly sharp. The cameraman was high up on Victoria Flour Mills.

The photo originally belonged to Sir William Arrol & Co. Ltd., Glasgow. The company were the contractors to Grimsby Corporation and built the bridge to a design by Alfred C. Gardner (1880-1952), Docks Engineer to London and North Eastern Railway. Sir William Arrol & Co. Ltd. built many famous bridges including the second Tay Bridge, the Forth Bridge, Tower Bridge in London, Keadby Bridge, the Humber Bridge, the Severn Bridge, the Forth Road Bridge, Southwark Bridge in London and the Nile Bridge at Cairo. Sir William Arrol & Co. Ltd. also built large cranes as far away as Bunbury, Western Australia.

The banner on the bridge says, “GREETINGS TO OUR EMPIRE’S AMBASSADOR”.

The huge woodyards where Sainsbury’s is today are Marshall, Knott & Barker Ltd. and Hewson Chapman & Co.

Some of the vessels visible are: ‘Dargle’ GY.1170, the tug ‘Marple’, ‘Catherine Charlton’ H.295 and ‘Silvernia’ GY.41.
