Princess Diana on King Edward Street, Grimsby - 29 March 1988

Historic Figures

Diana, Princess of Wales, greets the crowds on King Edward Street during her second visit to Grimsby. Wearing a bright pink suit with black lapels and a white blouse, she accepts flowers from well-wishers outside the New Enterprise Centre. Earlier that day, Diana visited Brigg, where she launched a regeneration project and visited Falcon Cycles before travelling to Grimsby for the opening of the New Enterprise Centre. The S. Krogh Nielsen shopfront is visible in the background, providing a distinctive landmark from King Edward Street's commercial past. The photograph captures the welcome Diana received from the people of Grimsby.

Diana's Private Life at the Time.

Diana was 26 and had been married to Prince Charles for nearly seven years. Their sons, William and Harry, were five and three. Earlier that month, Charles's close friend Major Hugh Lindsay had died in a skiing avalanche in Switzerland. Diana was experiencing personal difficulties, while the strains in her marriage would become more widely known in later years.
