Primitive Methodist Chapel, Cleethorpes c1910

Cleethorpes

An early 20th-century photographic postcard showing the Primitive Methodist Chapel at the junction of St Peter’s Avenue and Mill Road, Cleethorpes. The chapel bears the inscription “Primitive Methodist Connexion 1876” above the entrance.

A Primitive Methodist chapel was first built on the site in 1857, before being replaced by this larger chapel in 1877. By the 1970s, maintenance costs had become prohibitive and a complete rebuild was considered preferable. The chapel was demolished in 1979 and replaced by the present St Andrew’s Methodist Church, which opened on 1 December 1979.

To the right of the chapel is Saxon House, the home of Alfred Bannister, a local trawler owner, while Hampton Lodge can be seen on the extreme right.

The unused postcard is No. 23 in an XLCR series, probably published by A. Saynor, and dates from the early 20th century, probably c.1900–1915. No photographer or publisher is identified on the reverse.
