Receipt from George Frederick Sleight, Fish Merchant, Grimsby — 1934

This attractive receipt was issued by George Frederick Sleight, Grimsby, described on the printed heading as a Fish Merchant, Fish Salesman & Licensed Auctioneer. The design includes an engraved view of fishing vessels in Grimsby harbour, together with the firm's distinctive G.F.S. monogram and elaborate decorative lettering.

The receipt records the payment of £17 14s 10d from Mr H. Hayes. A two-pence revenue stamp has been attached and cancelled with the firm's handstamp.

The identity of H. Hayes has not yet been confirmed. One possibility is Harry Granville Hayes, born in 1908, whose father, J. J. Hayes, was a fish frier at 137 Freeman Street, Grimsby. There may alternatively have been a connection with C. E. Hayes, fish merchant, who traded from the Fish Dock Pontoon. Further research may establish which Hayes family was involved in this transaction.

Sir George Frederick Sleight (1853–1921) was a prominent figure in Grimsby's fishing industry. Although he had died thirteen years before this receipt was issued, the firm continued to trade under his name.
