'Olympic' GY.572, Ice Quay, Grimsby 1973

Grimsby Fish Docks

Built in 1945 at Assens Shipyard, Denmark, as the Danish fishing cutter 'Apollo' E.218, this seine-netter became the Grimsby-registered 'OLYMPIC' GY.572 in 1948. From 1948, she was owned and skippered by Henry Hansen of Grimsby, who remained associated with the vessel until her loss.

In 1980, 'OLYMPIC' GY.572 was lost on the Middle Rough in the North Sea. Her three-man crew survived, spending two days in a liferaft before being rescued. The wreck now lies on the seabed at approximately 30–40 metres, reportedly still upright.

This unique photograph was taken from the original negative, which has been acquired for the Grimsby & Cleethorpes Museum collection.
