Footpath between Doughty Road and Willingham Street, Grimsby - 1971
Early May 1971
Taken in early May 1971, this photograph shows the footpath linking Doughty Road with Willingham Street. The path ran between the former East Lincolnshire Railway line to Louth on the left and the Railway Street Works of Osmond & Sons Ltd. on the right.
Visible in the middle distance is Goods Junction Signal Box, which controlled the junction of railway lines serving Grimsby Town, the East Lincolnshire Railway and the docks. Beyond it stands one of the gas holders of the Grimsby Gas Works, a familiar feature of the town's skyline for much of the twentieth century.
The photograph records a part of Grimsby that has since disappeared completely. The railway, Goods Junction Signal Box, the gas holder and the Osmond works have all been demolished, and the area has been redeveloped. Today, much of the former railway alignment is occupied by Peaks Parkway, while the site of the Osmond works lies beneath later commercial development.
