Moody Lane, Grimsby, 1971

Grimsby

Photograph by E. H. Trevitt

This atmospheric photograph looks from the Bull Ring into Moody Lane, one of the narrow historic lanes in Grimsby's old Top Town, close to Grimsby Minster, during the final years before large-scale redevelopment reshaped the area. Lined with worn brick walls, stone paving and Victorian lamp standards, the lane captures a quiet corner of the town that had changed little for decades.

The 'Studio' shopfront on the right was one of many small businesses tucked away in the maze of lanes and yards surrounding the Bull Ring. By 1971, however, demolition and redevelopment were gathering pace, and scenes such as this were rapidly disappearing from the townscape.

Taken by local photographer E. H. Trevitt as part of his remarkable series "Photos of Top Town before and during demolition", the image preserves not only the buildings themselves but also the distinctive atmosphere of old Grimsby immediately before much of its historic street pattern disappeared.
