Frederick John Skill was born in Lincoln in 1857. He was the son of Willian Skill, civil engineer, sawyer, land surveyor, maltster and brewer and Sarah Skill (née Marsh). The family lived at 64 Bailgate, Lincoln.

In 1881, Frederick John Skill was a photographer and surveyor’s assistant living with his parents in Lincoln. He doesn’t appear to have married. By 1901, he was living in Ollerton, Nottinghamshire and working for George Esam as a photographer. By 1911, he was living and working as a photographer in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire. He died in Southwell, Nottinghamshire in 1920, aged 64.
