Mott the Hoople is an influential rock band from Hereford, best known for their glam rock anthems and their association with David Bowie. They formed in 1966 from a band called The Doc Thomas Group and, later, Silence. The band was renamed after a Willard Manus novel “Mott the Hoople”. Facing a breakup in 1972 due to poor sales, the band was rescued by David Bowie who wrote and produced their breakthrough hit “All the Young Dudes”. Later hits were, “All the Way from Memphis” (1973) and “Roll Away the Stone” (1973). The band have had reunions as late as 2019.
