An original, milk glass ashtray or pin tray / trinket tray. West Dock Street was a historic road near the Riverhead in Grimsby, acting as a crucial link between the town centre and the docks. The old Haven Mill and buildings faced West Dock Street. The street was replaced by Frederick Ward Way in the early 1990s.
Great Grimsby Marine Stores Ltd. was a company founded by Hiram Lawrence in the 1920s. They had premises on Albert Street. This building was destroyed in the war but can still be seen on the well-known Garibaldi Street mural. The company moved to West Dock Street. Some still remember taking scrap metal, rags, clothes, papers, rope, canvas etc. there to exchange for cash.
