The location of the Queen’s Observatory (1900-1949) in People’s Park, Grimsby 1979.

Grimsby

Four lombardy poplar (Populus nigra ‘Italica’) trees were planted around the tower. It appears that three were still growing in 1979 when this aerial photo was taken. The red X marks the position where the tower stood.

Only one lombardy poplar tree is still standing today and is marked on the photo with a yellow X. This tree can be used to find where the tower once stood.

See images of the Observatory on this website. Many of the stones (iron slag and limestone rubble?) from the tower have been used to make a robust border for the lake.
