Bomb damage in Abbey Park Road, Grimsby in August 1940.
During the late evening of August 18th 1940, the Luftwaffe dropped a stick of bombs which fell on the Abbey Road area of Grimsby. This photo shows the scene the next morning in Abbey Park Road where one of the bombs fell.
Another of the bombs killed Fred North outside his home in nearby Abbey Drive West. He was the first of over 180 people who were to die in air raids in the Grimsby area in WW2.
The houses in the photo were repaired and still look much the same today.
The photo was taken by Eric S. Green, press photographer (freelance) of 9 Wintringham Road, Grimsby. Eric Stanley Green was born in Grimsby in 1905. He married Daisy E Wood in Grimsby in 1930. Eric died in Grimsby in 1954, aged 48.
