Parkin Atkin Soda Syphon; Grimsby, early 20th century.
An early 20th century Parkin Atkin soda water syphon filled by Bellamy Bros. Ltd. Both companies date back to 19th century Grimsby. The metal top is porcelain lined and is also marked ‘P. Atkin, Grimsby’.
The Bellamy Bros. Ltd. label shows that the company was active in Louth, Skegness and Grantham as well as in their home town of Grimsby. The company appears to have won won awards in 1888, 1890, 1897, 1898 and 1900. The right hand circle on the label reads, “1900. Highest Award. Aqua Water Competition. Awarded to Bellamy Bros., Grimsby. Gilbert Smith, Donor.” The left hand circle shows that Bellamy Bros. won gold and silver medals and diplomas awarded by ‘National Exhibition & Market Brewers & Allied Trade’.
Parkin Atkin was a mineral water manufacturer in Bethlehem Street, Grimsby in the early 20th century. Bellamy Bros. Ltd. were mineral water manufacturers in Hamilton Street, Grimsby. By WWII, Parkin Atkin had moved to Cromwell Road. Bellamy Brothers Ltd. were still in Hamilton Street.
Parkin Atkin was born in the Grimsby area in 1855. He died in Grimsby in 1936, aged 82.
