St James’s Church, Grimsby by A. G. Stevens c1904.
Now Grimsby Minster. St James’ Church was granted minster status in 2010.
A postcard facsimile of an original watercolour drawing by Albert George Stevens (1863-1925). Printed and published by J. W. Ruddock of Lincoln as part of their “Artist” Series.
Albert George Stevens was a founding member of the Staithes Art Group, based near Whitby in North Yorkshire; he painted in the impressionist style, mainly in water colours. It is believed that just four paintings of Grimsby were produced on postcards and date to about 1903/04.
Ruddock was a small Lincoln family firm competing with the ‘giants’ of the day such as Tuck yet they built up a team of competent, attractive artists and developed a high reputation for the quality of their printing. Some were local artists who were of high calibre such as Stevens.
