Tickler’s Jam Factory, Grimsby.

Grimsby

An early advertising postcard.

The son of George Tickler, a miller from Withern, Lincolnshire, Thomas George Tickler (1852-1938) was a very well-known Grimsby businessman. Thomas Tickler was also elected as the Unionist Member of Parliament for Great Grimsby in May 1914 following the death of the Conservative MP Sir George Doughty. He stood and won again in 1918.

Thomas Tickler built one of the largest factories in Grimsby, producing famous jams and marmalade.

Early in WW1, Ticklers secured a contract with the government to supply the front lines with jam. (The empty jam tins were used as makeshift grenades and were referred to as ‘Ticklers artillery’.)

Ticklers were taken over in the 1950s.

Note the railway line leading to the factory.
