Grimsby munitions workers.
Grimsby ladies on war service during WW1. Note their uniforms and the triangular “On War Service” badges that were issued to munition workers.
The government rented former fish curing houses on Victoria Street from trawler owner Sir Alec Black and transformed them into a munitions factory making 4.5 and 6 inch shells. Almost 500 women and 100 men worked at the factory.
The factory was one of the most efficient in Britain with very good relations between management and workers.
A group portrait by John S. Bullen of 183 Freeman St. “Alec Black. Munitions” is hand-written on the reverse.
