Sir George Doughty M.P. presents the Tradesmen’s Challenge Bowl to Mr J. T. Evison at the Grimsby Horse Show.

A Mr James T. Evison lived at ‘South Park Villa’, The Park (Park Drive), Grimsby. A James Thomas Evison was a beer retailer at 122 Freeman Street, Grimsby. He also ran the Smokers’ Arms Hotel at 175 Albion Street. James Thomas Evison was born locally in 1868 and died in Grimsby in 1913 aged 44. A Francis Charles Evison of ‘South Park Villa’, People’s Park fought in WW1.

Sir George Doughty (1854-1914) was MP for Grimsby for most of the period 1895-1914. His second wife was Eugenia Bertrance Stone OBE of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He met her during a tour of India in 1907. (His first wife, Rebecca Vere died suddenly at their home, Waltham Hall, in 1904.)

George Doughty was knighted in 1904. He was ousted as an M.P. by Tom Wing in January 1910 but regained his seat in December of the same year.

Sir George Doughty died suddenly at Waltham Hall in April 1914, aged 60. This triggered a by-election and Thomas Tickler became M.P. for Great Grimsby.
