A portrait by H. Jancowski, the excellent and prolific Grimsby photographer of the time. His main studio was at 3, Market Place, Grimsby. He also worked in Louth. This is the first mention, we have seen, of Jancowski having a studio in Manchester. His reputation must have extended beyond Lincolnshire by this time. Other early photographers gave Grimsby and London as their address. Was this a way of enhancing their standing in a competitive profession? Jancowski was a commercial photographer as well as a high street portrait photographer.

On the back of this photo a hand-written greeting in pen reads, “With every good wish Xmas 1900”.
