The Humberstone Colonnade was located at the very end of the central promenade just before the Kingsway. I have a postcard that shows the location.
The Grotto, Cleethorpes by S. J. Warren 1925.
Located on Humberstone Colonnade on the sea front facing the sea.
In the 1920s and 1930s, the Grotto Tea Gardens (Refreshment Rooms in Cliff Gardens) were owned by Miss Jessie Isabella Farquhar.
In the 1950s, the tea rooms became the Grotto Aquarium (Promenade). The site is where the waterfall and concrete pelican is now.
An original, real photographic postcard by Stanley John Warren. Stanley Warren moved from Eastbourne to Grimsby in 1926 or 1927. Perhaps he took this photo before he moved up here permanently? The postmark is clearly 22nd July 1925. Much more about the life of Stanley John Warren can be found on this site.
