Grimsby

An original, unposted, real photographic postcard by J. S. Bullen of Grimsby. The photograph shows the event held on 28th April 1910 when the Postmaster-General, Right Hon. Herbert Samuel M.P., unlocked the door of the new Post Office in Victoria Street. The mayor in the picture is Councillor R. W. Roberts. It is recorded that it was a very wet day! The Mayoress was the first customer. She bought a stamp and posted a letter. The Mayor sent a telegram to the King. Mr Samuel was presented with a gold key by Mr A. Shannan, the Postmaster. The party then proceeded to the Town Hall where a luncheon was held. Guests included Sir George Doughty with Lady Doughty, Mr T. Wing M.P., Edward Bannister, T. G. Tickler and about 90 others. The big names of Grimsby in its heyday were all there!

The photographer, Joseph Samuel Bullen, was an Irishman. He worked in Grimsby and Louth from c1905 until c1937. His studios were in Freeman Street and later in Welholme Road.

Note: A scar showing where the lamp in the picture was once bolted to the wall is still visible today on the former Post Office.
