Old Market Place, Grimsby; a Jay Em Jay Series postcard c1919.

Grimsby

A real photographic postcard showing a superb view in the Old Market Place just after WW1. Two different forms of transport; a horse-drawn carriage and a motor car, reg. no. EE 720, are parked next to each other, the drivers close by dressed in their livery and uniforms. The ‘new’ buildings on the right have the date 1913 in the half triangle at the top (they transformed the skyline from previous pictures before this date).

The name Bowman on one of the shops is that of Frank Bowman, saddler and harness maker at 26 Old Market Place. To the left, in the distance on the corner of Wellowgate, is John Allenby’s shop with advertising on the wall ‘J.Allenby, Family Butcher’. The scene is complemented by locals going about their business. A nostalgic picture with excellent clarity.

Published by Jackson & Son (Gy) Ltd., Grimsby & Bradford with their ‘Jay Em Jay (Gy ) Series’ brand.

The postcard was sent on 19th September 1919 by Uncle Gaston to his niece Blanch(ette) in Fécamp, France (a fishing port).
